Why Arosa

Because the Arosa Weisshorn cable car starts close to the station and its lower section alone reaches the bear sanctuary, letting you combine skiing and a wildlife stop on the same lift, without a car. The Urdenbahn then joins the resort to Lenzerheide for 225 km of groomed runs together, up to 2865 m.

Where to sleep

Arriving by train or heading straight for the Weisshorn lift: the station and Obersee. First stay or with the ski school: Innerarosa, close to the Hörnli-Express. Looking for quiet, golf or forest walks: Maran and Prätschli, the sun terrace above the village.

Watch out

Arosa is not car-free: the drive from Chur climbs 360 curves on the Schanfiggerstrasse, and alpine, goods and forest roads need a permit from the municipality or the e24 app. Lift dates are only the earliest possible opening and can shift by up to 3 days, so check the operator’s page before you book activities around them.

Arosa, before you book

Arosa lies at 1775 m in Graubünden, at the top end of a Rhaetian Railway line that leaves from the street outside Chur station and reaches the village in one hour and one minute, direct. The village is not car-free: the Schanfiggerstrasse climbs from Chur over 30 km, through 360 curves and 1320 m of height difference, about 40 minutes by car. The municipality counts around 2300 residents outside the season, rising to about 3600 when the hotels and apartments fill for winter and summer.

Where to sleep here follows the lifts. Around the station and the Obersee, the Arosa Weisshorn cable car valley station stands a passerelle away, the obvious base for arriving by train or heading straight up the mountain. Innerarosa, the older, higher end of the village, gathers the ski school, bus stops and the Hörnli-Express near the Gada stop. Above the village, Maran and Prätschli form a sun terrace reached by road or bus, with the golf course and the forest walks, the quieter of the three.

The choice ranges from spa hotels to a family-run address near the station. The Tschuggen Grand Hotel and the Waldhotel lead on wellness, with spas of 5000 and 1800 square metres; the Valsana and Hotel Alpensonne sit in the middle tier; the Arosa Vetter Hotel, 23 rooms near the station, is the least expensive address in this selection. Our dated price samples show winter nights above summer ones at every hotel with both, most noticeably at the Tschuggen Grand Hotel.

Winter runs at full operation from 19 December 2026 to 29 March 2027, with partial skiing already possible from 28 November and again until 11 April 2027. Summer reaches full operation from 27 June to 18 October 2026, the season for the 261 km network of trails. From Zürich HB, allow two hours and thirty-one minutes by train, with one change at Chur, or drive up from Chur itself in about 40 minutes on the Schanfiggerstrasse.

Station and Obersee

Around Arosa station, at the top of the Chur line, right by the lake

This is the sector for arriving with luggage and heading straight for the mountain: the Arosa Weisshorn cable car valley station is a passerelle away from Arosa station, and the Arosa Vetter Hotel counts 20 metres to the lift and 50 to the platform. It suits a first stay or a short one, by the Obersee itself. The trade-off is distance from Innerarosa’s older streets and from the Hörnli-Express on the other side of the village.

Innerarosa

The upper, older end of the village, around the Hörnli-Express gondola

The upper, older end of the village gathers the ski school, the bus stops and the Hörnli-Express gondola near the Gada stop. Hotel Alpensonne puts the lift, school and buses within 150 metres, with the Hörnli station about five minutes away, which makes this the practical base for ski week or for families using the buses daily. It sits further from the Weisshorn lift and the lakeside station area.

A squirrel trail to Maran, and a loop past four lakes

Just the first section of the Arosa Weisshorn cable car is needed to reach the visitor platform at the bear sanctuary, at 2,000 m, a project run together with FOUR PAWS. The cable car operates from 09:00 to 17:00, with the last descent at 17:40, so a bear visit fits easily either side of a day on the mountain.

The Skiclub Arosa built this hut on the highest point of the Hörnligrat and opened it on 9 December 1923; it still serves food and drink in both seasons and has rooms for the night, reached by the Hörnli-Express from the valley station near the Gada bus stop.

Getting to Arosa, in practice

By car from Chur

The Schanfiggerstrasse climbs 30 km through 360 curves and 1,320 m of height difference, about 40 minutes from Chur, so budget extra time if you are not used to mountain roads. Coaches are limited to 2.3 m wide, 4.0 m high and 18 t. If you would rather skip the curves altogether, Park and Rail in Chur lets you leave the car down in the valley and finish the trip by train.

By train

Chur to Arosa takes 1 h 01, direct, on the Rhaetian Railway line that starts in the street outside Chur station, so allow a short walk if you are connecting from the main station hall. From Zürich HB, the trip is 2 h 31 with one change at Chur, easily done with a single mainline ticket.

The Arosa Card

Every overnight guest receives the Arosa Card from the first night in a hotel, holiday apartment or campsite, valid from the pre-season weekend at the end of May to the end of October 2026. It covers all open Arosa mountain railways, the local bus and the Rhaetian Railway between Lüen-Castiel and Arosa, so pack it instead of buying separate tickets for the lifts and the bus during a summer stay.

Alpine road bans

Motor vehicles and motorcycles need a permit for alpine, goods and forest roads around Arosa, obtained from the municipality or via SMS or the e24 app. Sort this out before you plan a drive off the main road, since arriving at a barrier without a permit means turning back.

Is it worth staying in Arosa itself rather than day-tripping from Chur?

Yes, for the card alone: from the first night in a hotel, holiday apartment or campsite you receive the Arosa Card, covering all open Arosa mountain railways, the local bus and the Rhaetian Railway between Lüen-Castiel and Arosa. A day tripper from Chur pays for lifts and transport separately, so an overnight stay changes the maths on even a short visit.

Station, Innerarosa or Maran?

The station end puts you 20 m from the Weisshorn cable car, Innerarosa sits 150 m from the Hörnli-Express, and Maran and Prätschli form the quiet terrace above the village, with the golf course and the forest walks. Pick the station or Innerarosa for the shortest walk to a lift, and Maran and Prätschli if quiet mornings matter more than being first on the slopes.

How long does the train take?

Chur to Arosa is 1 h 01 direct on the Rhaetian Railway, and Zürich HB to Arosa takes 2 h 31 with one change at Chur. Either way the train arrives inside the village itself, so there is no shuttle or taxi to add once you step off.

Can I see the bears without hiking?

Yes. The first section of the Arosa Weisshorn cable car takes you directly to the visitor platform at the bear sanctuary, at 2,000 m, and it runs from 09:00 to 17:00 with the last descent at 17:40. Plan your visit to leave the mountain by then, since there is no later car down.

When does the ski area open?
