Brunnen, before you book

Brunnen is one of the two localities of the municipality of Ingenbohl, in canton Schwyz, where Lake Lucerne narrows before the Rütli meadow. You can reach it by train, boat, bus or car, and the promenade along the Waldstätterquai has carried travellers since the village’s income once came from portage across the lake. The name goes back to the oldest Einsiedeln income register, from 1217 to 1222, when a certain Arnold de Brunnon is recorded here.

Three sides decide where to sleep. The Waldstätterquai carries the SGV boat landing and the tourist office, on a promenade Switzerland Tourism calls one of the most beautiful in the country. A short walk up, Bahnhofstrasse and the station form a plainer, practical centre, where Schwyz Tourismus itself keeps its address. On the Axenstrasse side, toward Morschach, the historic lakeside road runs past the valley station of the Brunnen-Urmiberg cable car.

Brunnen’s hotels split between the lake and the station. Seehotel Waldstätterhof is the four-star house on the Waldstätterquai, with four restaurants under one roof, and Hotel Schmid & Alfa has 32 rooms in two houses on the Axenstrasse, also on the water. Back from the lake, Hotel Weisses Rössli sits on the Bahnhofstrasse and the City Hotel, with 55 rooms, is the largest address in this selection. Until the end of May 2027 the lakeside is being redesigned, so ask about weekday noise when you book a room facing the water.

Brunnen leans on the lake in summer, for steamer trips, kayaking and canoeing, and on connections toward the Rigi cable cars and the Stoos funicular when the mountains take over for winter sports. The Rütli meadow, the traditional founding site of the Confederacy, is one ferry landing away, where the 35 km Weg der Schweiz begins. This is Brunnen’s plainer, practical side, where Schwyz Tourismus AG itself keeps its address at Bahnhofstrasse 15, near the railway station. It suits a first stay or an early departure more than a long evening out, since neither the lake promenade nor the Axenstrasse cable car sit right at the door. The Waldstätterquai and its boat landing are a short walk downhill from here.

Getting to Brunnen, in practice

Arriving without a car

Brunnen is reachable comfortably by train, boat, bus or car, so a stay here does not require driving. The village is not car-free itself, and the Axenstrasse carries traffic straight through the Morschach side of town.

The lake boat from Lucerne

SGV boats call at Brunnen on the route from Lucerne’s Pier 1, alongside Weggis, Vitznau and Flüelen, and the Swiss Travel Pass, the Swiss Travel Pass Flex and the Swiss Transfer Ticket all give free travel on board.

Budget separately for the Urmiberg cable car
