Why Lenzerheide

Because the Urdenbahn cable car ties Lenzerheide straight into Arosa, turning two resorts into one 225 km ski area you can reach without changing base. The Heidsee sits at the centre of it all, so a walk round the lake or an afternoon at the lido is part of the stay in any season.

Where to sleep

Skiing or the Rothornbahn on your doorstep: the village centre, on the Voa Principala. A quieter stay by the water: Valbella, at the far end of the Heidsee. Something older and set apart, above the village: Sporz, at 1,600 m.

Watch out

Lenzerheide has no railway station, so the PostBus is your only public transport link in and out, and the main Chur to Tiefencastel road runs straight through the resort. Lift dates are the earliest possible opening and can shift by up to 3 days, so check the operator’s site close to your travel dates rather than book around them blindly.

Lenzerheide, before you book

Lenzerheide sits at 1,476 metres in the municipality of Vaz/Obervaz, home to 2,655 permanent residents, and a public road, the main route between Chur and Tiefencastel, runs straight through the resort. There is no railway station: from Chur, the direct PostBus line 182 covers the last stretch in 39 minutes, and the whole trip from Zürich HB, with one change at Chur, takes 2 hours and 2 minutes.

The geography here turns on the Heidsee, the lake at the centre of the resort, with Lenzerheide village at one end and Valbella, at 1,535 metres, at the other. The village centre, on the Voa Principala, holds the tourist office and the Rothornbahn valley station, the base for skiing and for the lake walk alike. Above it, at 1,600 metres, the hamlet of Sporz keeps its old Maiensäss hay barns, now converted into hotel rooms looking down the Albula valley.

The hotels range from the 75-room Schweizerhof in the village centre to the Revier Mountain Lodge next to the Rothornbahn, with the GUARDA VAL Maiensäss-Hotel in its converted hay barns at Sporz and the Valbella Resort by the far shore of the lake. Our dated price samples put the Revier as the least expensive address in the selection, and at the Sunstar and the Lenzerhorn, the winter nights we sampled cost noticeably more than the summer ones.

Winter runs at full operation from 19 December 2026 to 29 March 2027, with partial operation from 28 November and again until 11 April, and summer at full operation from 27 June to 18 October 2026. Whichever season you choose, the journey ends the same way: a PostBus from Chur, 39 minutes direct, or 2 hours and 2 minutes door to door from Zürich HB with that one change.

Lenzerheide village centre

The main street Voa Principala, the tourist office and the Rothornbahn valley station

This is the practical heart of the resort: the tourist office, the Rothornbahn valley station and the start of the Heidsee lake walk sit within a few steps of each other along the Voa Principala. It suits a first stay or anyone building a day around the lift and the lake loop, with the Revier Mountain Lodge right at the valley station and the Lenzerhorn further along the same street. In exchange for that convenience, you are on the main street rather than by the water or up at Sporz.

The Heidsee and Valbella

The lake shore and the village at its northern end, at 1535 m

The lake shore is built around the Heidsee itself: a lido on the left bank rents boats and chairs and has a kiosk nearby, while the far shore stays a nature conservation zone. Valbella, at the northern end of the lake, suits a quieter stay closer to the water, with the Valbella Resort standing right on the shore. In exchange, you are further from the Rothornbahn and the shops of the village centre.

Sporz

A hillside hamlet of old Maiensäss barns above the village, at 1,600 m

Sporz sits above the village at 1,600 metres, a hillside hamlet of old Maiensäss hay barns looking down the Albula valley, with the GUARDA VAL converted into a hotel among them. It suits a stay built around that setting rather than around the lifts, though the Sunstar, on the road up to the hamlet, keeps one foot closer to the village below. The trade-off is the climb itself: everything in the village centre is now downhill from your room.

On foot

A loop right around the lake, from the tourist office

The route starts and ends at the tourist office and circles the Heidsee completely, an easy loop of 47 metres of ascent and 46 metres of descent between 1,471 and 1,508 metres, so it works as a short outing on either a ski day or a summer afternoon.

Up the mountain

A bahn to the highest point of the area, and the lift that reaches Arosa

The valley station stands in the village; Scharmoin, the middle stop, has a children’s play area and the bike skill centre, and the line tops out at the Parpaner Rothorn, 2,865 metres, the highest point of the whole Arosa Lenzerheide area. From up there, the ski area and the bike park both start at your feet, whichever season brought you up.
Urdenbahnin service since January 2014
In service since January 2014, the Urdenbahn aerial tramway cost CHF 50 million and 9 months of construction to link Arosa with Lenzerheide, joining the two into the biggest connected ski area in the canton of Graubünden, 225 kilometres of slopes. Ride it once and you have crossed between resorts without ever touching a road.

Reached by the Heidbüel/Scalottas chairlift, running 08:30 to 17:00, the summit restaurant serves breakfast and lunch from 08:45 to 16:45, with fresh baked goods and a Scalottas plate of Grisons meat and cheese specialities. It is a lift-served stop rather than a walk-in one, so time your descent around the last chairlift back down.
Crap NarosLenzerheide village
Down in the village, Crap Naros is the Guarda Val house’s second table, run alongside its restaurant up at the Sporz hotel, and both are described by the house as regional cooking. It gives guests staying at either end of the resort, village or Sporz, the same kitchen to choose from.

Getting to Lenzerheide, in practice

No railway station

Lenzerheide has no railway station, so the PostBus is the connection that gets you here: line 182 runs direct from the post bus station above Chur railway station, in 39 minutes. Build that transfer into your journey rather than expecting to step straight off a train.

By car

Drivers from Zurich and St. Gallen come via Sargans to Chur, then via Chur-South to Lenzerheide, with car parks at Scalottas, Rothorn, Fadail and Valbella. Pay for parking through PayByPhone, and use one of the four charging stations if you are driving electric.

Free transit with a winter ski ticket

Valid day, multi-day and season ski tickets include free second-class travel on the Rhaetian Railway and the PostBus between Arosa, Chur, Lenzerheide and Tiefencastel, so keep that ticket on you for the journey rather than buying a separate fare. Single trips and EarlyBird tickets do not qualify, and the sports bus in Lenzerheide itself is free all winter, no ticket needed.

The Arosa Card does not reach here

Guests holding the Arosa Card should know it does not cover the Lenzerheide mountain railways, even though the two resorts share one ski area: budget for a separate Lenzerheide lift ticket if that is the card you are travelling with.

Is there a train to Lenzerheide?

No. Lenzerheide has no railway station: from Chur it is a 39 minute PostBus, line 182, and Zürich HB to Lenzerheide takes 2 hours and 2 minutes with that one change at Chur. Build the bus leg into your travel time rather than expecting to arrive by train.

Lenzerheide or Valbella?

Lenzerheide (1,476 metres) has the main street, the tourist office and the Rothornbahn valley station; Valbella (1,535 metres) sits at the northern end of the Heidsee, with the lake loop between them published at 5.5 kilometres and 1 hour 15. Choose Lenzerheide to step straight out onto the lift, and Valbella if you would rather wake up by the water.

Can I ski over to Arosa?

Yes, the Urdenbahn has connected Arosa with Lenzerheide since January 2014, making the 225 km of groomed slopes of Arosa Lenzerheide one shared area. The lift can close for maintenance outside the main seasons, so check the operator before you plan a day that depends on that crossing.

Does my ski pass cover the bus and train?

In winter, valid day, multi-day and season tickets include free second-class Rhaetian Railway and PostBus travel between Arosa, Chur, Lenzerheide and Tiefencastel, so there is no need to buy a separate fare for that route.
