Weggis sits on the shore of Lake Lucerne, in the canton of Lucerne, home to 4,607 residents in a climate distinctly mild for the region, almost Mediterranean, where palms, chestnuts and figs grow in the open air, the reason Mark Twain called it the loveliest spot on the Luzerner Riviera in 1897. The village itself is reached by road, with two car parks of its own. Only the Rigi above it, including its highest district, Rigi Kaltbad, has no public road: from Weggis, a cable car covers that last stretch in ten minutes.

Three areas split the village. Seestrasse runs along the shore, with the SGV boat landing and the tourist office at number 5; Dorfplatz, set back from the water, holds the historic centre around the parish church; Hertenstein has its own boat stop, the valley station of the Rigi Kaltbad cable car, and Villa Senar, Rachmaninoff’s lakeside house, a fifteen-minute walk from its jetty. Choosing between them means choosing between the boats, the old village or the quickest way up to Rigi Kaltbad.

Seestrasse and the boat landing

Along the lake shore

This is the shore road you land on if you arrive by SGV boat: the landing stage and the tourist office share the address Seestrasse 5, and the Beau Rivage and the Alexander stand right on the water. It suits a first stay built around the boats, with the Rigi cable car and the old village both within reach on foot. In exchange, the historic centre and Villa Senar sit further along the shore, not on this stretch itself.

The historic centre

Set back from the water, Dorfplatz keeps the parish church and, near the Hertenstein landing stage, Café Vienna; the Alpenblick, on Luzernerstrasse, looks south to Pilatus, Rigi and Bürgenstock. It suits travellers who want the historic centre over a lakefront room, with a heated indoor pool of its own to fall back on. The trade-off is a short walk back to the boat landing at Seestrasse for the SGV steamers.

Toward Rigi Kaltbad

Hertenstein has its own boat stop, the valley station of the Rigi Kaltbad cable car, and Villa Senar, Rachmaninoff’s lakeside house, a fifteen-minute walk from the jetty. It suits a stay built around the ten-minute ride up to car-free Rigi Kaltbad rather than around the boats to Lucerne. None of the five hotels in this guide lists Hertenstein as its sector, so book on Seestrasse or Dorfplatz and cover the rest on foot or by cable car.

The park is open 15 May to 31 October, Thursday to Sunday, noon to 5pm, run since April 2023 by the Serge Rachmaninoff Foundation, so plan a Hertenstein walk around those days if the villa is the point of the visit.

Getting to Weggis

By boat from Lucerne

SGV steamships and motor vessels reach Weggis from Lucerne in just under an hour, with hourly connections in summer. The Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Travel Pass Flex and Swiss Transfer Ticket all give free travel on the boats, so pack one of them and skip paying for the crossing separately.

By bus

AAGS line 508 runs a half-hourly lakeside service toward Küssnacht am Rigi and Brunnen; lines 502 and 653 also serve the region. Cash fares in CHF are accepted on board, so you can turn up at the stop without a ticket bought in advance.

By car

Küssnacht am Rigi, on the A4 motorway, is the nearest railway station; the lakeside road from there to Weggis is about 10 km. Weggis has two car parks of its own, so plan to leave the car there and continue on foot or by boat rather than looking for roadside parking in the village.

Up to Rigi Kaltbad

The Weggis-Rigi Kaltbad cable car, run by Rigi Bahnen AG, reaches the car-free resort in 10 minutes. Pack for the mountain rather than the lake if you are heading up for the day, since Rigi Kaltbad has no public road for a return drive down.
