Les Diablerets, before you book

Les Diablerets sits at 1200 m on the north side of the Diablerets massif, in canton Vaud’s municipality of Ormont-Dessus. Drivers reach it by the A9 motorway to Aigle and then the valley road, with a Swiss motorway vignette required; the ASD line covers the same route by rail from Aigle. The village hosts the Diablerets Alpine Centre, an official Swiss Ski training facility set up after the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games, and sits under 40 km from Montreux and about 120 km from Geneva airport.

The tourist office groups its 8 listed hotels into three areas. The village centre sits within walking distance of the lifts, with hotels between 700 m and 1.5 km from several of them. Behind it, the historic core keeps the oldest address in the village, L’Hotel du Pillon, alongside a traditional chalet and a hotel close to both hiking trails and the ski slopes. Outside the main village, Vers-l’Eglise and Lac Retaud, at 1685 m near Col du Pillon, sit apart from the centre.

The choice ranges from an 1891 chalet to a lakeside auberge. Hotel Les Lilas dates to 1891, with rooms renovated in 2010, while the Glacier Hotel has stayed in the same family for 40 years, with a pool and sauna. In Vers-l’Eglise, Auberge de l’Ours holds 14 Gault&Millau points, and Auberge Restaurant du Lac Retaud sits directly above its own mountain-cuisine restaurant, on the shore of the lake at 1685 m.

This is the practical base for a first stay: the chalets and hotels sit within walking distance of the centre, with several ski lifts between 700 m and 1.5 km away. Hotel Les Lilas has stood since 1891, and the Glacier Hotel has stayed with the same family for four decades. The trade-off is character: the village’s oldest buildings sit a short walk away, in the historic core behind the main street.

Step behind the main street and Les Diablerets shows its older side. L’Hotel du Pillon, the oldest hotel in the village by the tourist office’s own description, catches the morning sun and looks out to the mountains, and Auberge de la Poste keeps a traditional chalet dining room for Swiss specialities. Choose this side for a village feel rather than for the shortest walk to a lift; Hotel Le Chamois, close to both the trails and the slopes, sits at its edge.

By train from Aigle

The ASD line connects Les Diablerets from Aigle, with published journeys of 1 h 05 from Lausanne, 1 h from Montreux, 2 h 20 from Geneva and 5 h 20 from Paris Gare de Lyon via Lausanne on TGV Lyria. Check the full timetable at cff.ch before you travel.

Driving in, with a vignette

By car, take the A9 motorway to the Aigle exit, then the valley road; a Swiss motorway vignette, CHF 40 a year, is required. Published driving times are 1 h 35 from Geneva, 1 h 30 from Chamonix, 2 h from Zermatt and 6 h 15 from Paris.

Nearest airports

The nearest airports are Sion, 60 km away, Geneva, 120 km away, and Zurich, 250 km away. Plan the last leg by car or by the ASD train from Aigle, since none of the three sits inside the valley.
