Why Saas-Fee

Because you get a glacier and a quiet village in the same stay. About 40 minutes after leaving your hotel, the Metro Alpin, an underground railway inside the mountain, sets you down at Mittelallalin at 3500 m; back in the village, cars stay at the entrance and 350 km of paths start from the streets.

Where to sleep

First stay or want everything on foot: Dorfplatz and the centre, flat and compact with the shops and the main square. Skiing or the lifts as the priority: Panoramastrasse, where the Alpin Express and the Felskinn cable car start and some hotels sit right on the piste. Looking for quiet: Wildistrasse and Lomattenstrasse, above the centre towards the larch forest.

Watch out

No buses run inside the village in summer and autumn, so plan on walking, an electro-taxi or your hotel’s transfer to reach it with luggage. In winter 2026/27, Plattjen and Hannig open only from 19 December, weeks after the Alpin Express and the Metro Alpin: check the dates before you book if you want the whole area open from day one.

Saas-Fee, before you book

Saas-Fee sits at 1800 metres at the foot of the Dom, 4545 metres and the highest mountain entirely on Swiss soil, and the village keeps cars at its edge by rule. Drivers stop at the entrance, unload at Terminal A or B, and park in the Parkhaus Saas-Fee or the open car park. From Visp, PostBus line 511 runs every half hour straight to the village, and the tourist office gives about three hours from Zurich, Geneva, Basel or Milan airports.

Inside the village, geography does the sorting. Dorfplatz and the shopping streets sit flat and central, an easy base for a first stay since no buses run inside the village in summer and autumn. Panoramastrasse, at one end, is where the Alpin Express and the Felskinn cable car start, with ski-in, ski-out hotels close by. Above the centre, Wildistrasse and Lomattenstrasse climb towards the larch forest for a quieter stay, while the Feehof sits apart, on the northern edge near the entrance and the car park.

The choice ranges from The Capra on Lomattenstrasse, with its own wine cellar and the Peak Health Spa, to a hostel run by the Swiss Youth Hostels association on Panoramastrasse, with family-run hotels on Dorfplatz and the lift side in between. In our dated price samples, the wellnessHostel4000 and the Feehof are the two least expensive addresses in this selection, and at the Feehof, where both seasons were sampled, the winter night cost more than the summer one.

Winter runs from 31 October 2026 to 18 April 2027 on the Alpin Express, the Metro Alpin and the Spielboden-Längfluh line, though Plattjen and Hannig only join from 19 December. In summer, 350 km of hiking paths and themed trails fan out from the village itself. From Zurich, Geneva, Basel or Milan airports, allow about three hours via Visp, where PostBus line 511 runs every half hour straight to Saas-Fee.

Dorfplatz and the centre

The main square and the shopping street

This is the flattest, most central part of the village, built around the main square and the shopping streets of Obere Dorfstrasse and Dorfstrasse. It suits a first stay or anyone who wants everything within reach on foot, since no buses run inside the village in summer and autumn. The trade-off is distance from the lifts: the Alpin Express and the Felskinn cable car start at the far end of the village, on Panoramastrasse.

The end of the village for the Alpin Express

At this end of the village, the Saastal Bergbahnen head office, the Alpin Express and the Felskinn cable car sit close together, and some hotels state they are directly on the piste or a couple of minutes from the ski lifts. It is the obvious choice for anyone skiing every day. In exchange, it sits further from the shops and the main square on Dorfplatz, a longer walk in a village with no summer buses.

Towards the larch forest

Above the car-free centre, Wildistrasse and Lomattenstrasse climb towards the larch forest, a quieter address for anyone who prefers distance from the main square. The Feehof instead sits on the northern edge of the village, near the entrance and the car park, a practical choice for arriving with luggage or an apartment stay. Either way, the trade-off is the same walk back down to the lifts on Panoramastrasse.

In summer, it is about 50 minutes on foot up from the village to the Gletschergrotte mountain restaurant at 2000 m, just off the Spielboden to Saas-Fee trail. The restaurant serves Swiss cooking and a cake buffet, which makes it a natural stop before the walk back down.
Saas-Fee to Saas-Almagell40 min · woodland path
A 40-minute woodland path connects Saas-Fee to the neighbouring village of Saas-Almagell, and the tourist office lists it among its pushchair-friendly walks. It is an easy option if you are travelling with young children or want a shorter outing than the mountain trails.

Two cable cars above the village

Metro AlpinMittelallalin, 3500 m · about 40 min
The tourist office calls it the highest underground railway in the world: from Felskinn it runs inside the mountain to Mittelallalin at 3500 m, about 40 minutes from Saas-Fee including the transfer. At the top, the Ice Pavilion is a 5500 m³ cave inside the Fee glacier, worth building into the same trip since you are already at altitude.

A cable car reaches Hannig at 2336 m in about 5 minutes, the shorter of the two rides, and a newly renovated mountain restaurant with a large terrace waits at the top. It suits an afternoon when a longer trip to Mittelallalin does not fit the day.

At the top of the Metro Alpin, the Revolving Restaurant Allalin turns 360 degrees in an hour over 200 seats, serving regional and international dishes daily from 09:00 to 15:30, with hot meals from 11:00 to 15:00. Plan lunch inside that window, since it is the only stretch of the day hot food is served.

The mountain restaurant at Spielboden, 2448 m, follows the gondola timetable and has a large sun terrace with winter barbecues. In spring and summer, marmots gather below the restaurant, where feed is sold with a deposit, so keep coins ready if you want to feed them.

Car-free, in practice

Unload at the entrance

Plan to unload luggage at Terminal A or Terminal B before you park, since the village itself takes no cars. Parking then costs nothing for the first 30 minutes in summer, up to CHF 15 a day or CHF 105 a week after that, and up to CHF 20 a day or CHF 140 a week in winter, so budget for the higher winter tariff if you are staying more than a couple of days.

From Visp by PostBus

Take the train to Visp, then PostBus line 511 straight to Saas-Fee, which leaves every half hour so there is no need to plan around a fixed departure. Allow about three hours door to door from Zurich, Geneva, Basel or Milan airports.

In the village

Expect to walk, since no buses run inside the village in summer and autumn: taxis and hotel transfers cover the local trips instead. If you are staying in an apartment, ask the landlord about pickup by electro-taxi or a handcart for the luggage, rather than assuming a shuttle is included.

Paying for the lifts

Book at least one night with a partner business and the SaastalCard becomes free, covering nine mountain railways in the valley night for night, though not the Metro Alpin. Budget CHF 50 extra per adult for the Metro Plus Ticket if Mittelallalin is on your plan.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive into Saas-Fee?

No. Saas-Fee is car-free, so you unload luggage at Terminal A or B at the village entrance, then park in the multi-storey Parkhaus Saas-Fee or the open car park. Summer parking is free for the first 30 minutes and up to CHF 15 a day after that; winter costs up to CHF 20 a day, so budget the higher tariff for a winter stay.

How do I get there without a car?

Take the train to Visp, then PostBus line 511 straight to Saas-Fee, which runs every half hour so there is no need to plan around one departure. Allow about three hours in total from Zurich, Geneva, Basel or Milan airports, and build that into your first and last day.

Do I pay for the cable cars?

Not for most of them if you stay the night: the SaastalCard is free from your first overnight stay at a partner business and covers nine mountain railways in the valley for as many days as you have nights. Mittelallalin, at 3500 m, holds the Revolving Restaurant Allalin, which turns 360 degrees in an hour, and the Ice Pavilion, a 5500 m³ cave inside the Fee glacier. Allow about 40 minutes to get there from the village, so it fits easily into a half day out.

When do the lifts run in winter?
