Why Mürren

Because no road reaches it at all, not even to its edge: every stay here begins and ends with a cable car or a mountain train. That same isolation puts the Schilthorn cable car to Piz Gloria at 2970 m right in the village, and the Allmendhubel funicular four minutes from the centre, so the high mountains start at your front door rather than at the end of a drive.

Where to sleep

By the mountain train station for the shortest transfer up from Lauterbrunnen and for heavy luggage, which travels up on the same train. In the centre, near the Alpine Sports Centre and the Allmendhubel funicular, for restaurants and a pool close by. By the Schilthorn cable car for the first ride up in the morning and the quietest evenings, at the cost of a longer walk to the mountain train.

Getting here is always two legs, and each leg has its own maintenance breaks: the Schilthorn cable car runs a replacement bus from 19 to 30 October 2026, and the Allmendhubel funicular closes between its summer and winter timetables. Check the calendar for your dates before you book, especially if the Schilthorn ride is the reason for the trip.

Mürren, before you book

Mürren has no road at all, not even for a delivery van, and that fact alone dictates the whole visit. You arrive in two stages: cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp and then the mountain train, about 20 minutes, or the bus to Stechelberg and the cable car up through Gimmelwald, about 30 minutes. Either way the last vehicle you sit in is not a car, and once in the village you walk, because Mürren is one lane strung along a terrace.

The village runs between two stations, and that is what should decide where you sleep. At the north end, the mountain train from Grütschalp arrives, the shortest way in from Lauterbrunnen. At the south end, the Schilthorn cable car leaves for Birg and Piz Gloria. In between sit the Alpine Sports Centre, the tourist office and most restaurants, with the Allmendhubel funicular leaving from the centre for the four-minute ride to 1907 m.

Six hotels sit inside this small terrace, from a guest house opened in 1896 to a palace-style address renovated with a new wing in 2024. Our dated price samples put the Mürren Palace consistently at the top of the range and the Hotel Regina, near the mountain train station, consistently at the bottom, in both winter and summer. Between them, the mid-range houses swing the other way from what you might expect, with summer nights costing more than winter ones.

The ski season runs from 21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027, with a toboggan run that ends right in the village. The Allmendhubel funicular closes twice a year, between its winter and summer timetables, and the Schilthorn cable car itself runs a replacement bus from 19 to 30 October 2026, so a trip built entirely around that ride needs to dodge those dates. From Interlaken Ost, allow 53 minutes door to door.

By the mountain train station

North end of the village

This end of the village is the first thing you see after the ride up from Grütschalp, and the natural choice if you are coming and going more than once or carrying heavy bags, since they travel on the same train as you. The trade-off is distance from the Schilthorn cable car at the opposite end of the lane, a walk the length of the village.

The centre and the sports centre

Between the two stations

Between the two stations is where the village actually lives: the tourist office, most restaurants and the Alpine Sports Centre with its indoor pool are all here, and the Allmendhubel funicular leaves from the same spot for the four-minute ride to 1907 m. It suits anyone who wants to walk out the door onto the lane rather than to one end of it, in exchange for being slightly further from either cable car.

By the Schilthorn cable car

South end of the village

This is the base of the cable car to Birg and Piz Gloria, and where the route from Stechelberg arrives, so it suits skiers and early risers who want to be on the first cabin up. It is the quietest end of the village once the cable cars stop for the evening, in exchange for the longest walk to the mountain train at the opposite end.

Two cable car sections above the village reach 2970 m, where the restaurant turns full circle above the viewing terraces and the Bond exhibition. It is the highest point reached directly from Mürren, and the same lift that gates the ski area in winter.

At 2677 m, the middle station carries the Thrill Walk, a walkway fixed to the vertical rock face just below the platform. You can stop here on the way up to Piz Gloria or on the way back down.

At the top of the funicular, a short circular route passes up to 150 different mountain flowers in summer, easy enough for a pushchair. It sits right next to the panorama restaurant, the playground and the water maze, so it folds naturally into a longer stop at Allmendhubel.

The village sports centre at Höhematte has an indoor pool of 25 by 11 metres, the answer on a day when the cable cars are in cloud. Several hotels include entry for their guests, so check before paying at the door.

If you arrive by car, park in the multi-storey car park below Lauterbrunnen station, or at Stechelberg at the foot of the Schilthorn cable car, before continuing on foot or by lift.

Route one, about 20 minutes

The first route takes the cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp and then the mountain train along the terrace into Mürren, about 20 minutes in all.

Route two, about 30 minutes

The second route takes the PostBus from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg and then the cable car up through Gimmelwald, and it is the way in whenever the Grütschalp line is closed.

Inside the village you get around on foot from end to end, and from Interlaken Ost the whole journey, door to door, takes 53 minutes.
