Spiez, before you book

Spiez sits in a bay on Lake Thun, home to 13,445 residents (31 December 2025), up from 2,115 in 1850, spread across five districts: Spiez, Spiezwiler, Einigen, Faulensee and Hondrich. The regional tourist office places it between Thun and Interlaken, nestled in what it calls a picturesque bay on the deep-blue lake. You arrive by train: Bern is 30 minutes away direct, Thun 9 minutes, and Zurich HB about 1 h 32. Spiez is not car-free, a rail junction and lakeside town with roads running through it and a working marina at its centre.

Three sides give the town its shape. Around the harbour on Schachenstrasse, hotels sit beside the marina and the beach, right next to Schloss Spiez. Above them on Schlossstrasse, the castle stands surrounded by the Spiezer Rebberg, a vineyard at around 600 m, among the highest-situated vineyards north of the Alps. Further along Seestrasse, the shore continues toward Faulensee, one of the five districts, where the Strandweg lakeside walk begins at the Spiez open-air lake bath.

The choice runs from the Belvedere Strandhotel, a four-star superior Romantik hotel with 56 rooms and its own private beach and infinity pool, to Hotel Seegarten Marina, a three-star house of 46 rooms directly on the lake. Along Seestrasse, Hotel Eden offers 45 individually furnished rooms and junior suites with an outdoor salt-water pool, salt grotto and Finnish sauna, while Movieworld Spiez combines a cinema, bistro and hotel on Schlosslistrasse. What separates them is mostly setting: harbour, lakeshore or the everyday centre of town.

Schloss Spiez and its museum keep to a season of 1 May to 31 October, and the Niesenbahn funicular from nearby Mülenen runs from 25 April to 8 November 2026, climbing to the 2362 m summit in 30 minutes with a stop at the mid-station Schwandegg. The Spiezer Alpine Weinkultur wine outlet sells its own wine on weekday mornings year round, with tastings added from May. From Zurich HB, allow about 1 h 32 by direct train, arriving in the centre of Spiez itself.

Getting to and around Spiez, in practice

Bern, Thun, Zurich and Interlaken, all direct

Bern is 30 minutes away, Thun 9 minutes, and Zurich HB about 1 h 32, all direct. Onward to Interlaken Ost takes 23 minutes, also direct, which makes Spiez a practical junction for day trips across the Bernese Oberland.

Up the Niesen from Mülenen

The Niesenbahn does not leave from Spiez itself but from the valley station at nearby Mülenen. The historic 1910 funicular climbs to the mid-station Schwandegg in 15 minutes, then on to the 2362 m summit in another 15, and runs from 25 April to 8 November 2026.

Spiez is not car-free

Spiez is a rail junction and lakeside town with roads and a working marina, and no car ban is stated anywhere for the municipality. Keep that in mind if a car-free stay is part of the plan, since Spiez does not offer one.

Wine sales at the castle

The Spiezer Alpine Weinkultur outlet at Schlossstrasse 8 sells the cooperative’s own wine Monday to Friday, 8.00 to 11.30, year round. Tastings are added on Wednesday evenings from May to December and on Saturday mornings in May and June.
