The exact 2026/2027 opening and closing dates for the Vitznau-Rigi Kulm railway and the Vitznau-Hinterbergen cable car are not published, so confirm them with Rigi Bahnen before you plan a stay around either. The Swiss Travel Pass and Half-Fare travelcard also do not cover the Vitznau-Hinterbergen cable car, unlike the cogwheel line to Rigi Kulm.

Vitznau, before you book

Vitznau sits on the shore of Lake Lucerne, in the canton of Lucerne, home to 1,602 residents. The SGV boat from Lucerne crosses in just under an hour, with hourly sailings in summer, or take the AAGS bus along the lakeside road from Küssnacht am Rigi, the nearest railway station. The village itself is reached by road too, with two car parks of its own, Seestrasse and Altdorfbachweg; only the Rigi rising above it has no public road.

Everything here turns towards the Rigi, and that decides where to sleep. The Vitznau-Rigi Kulm cogwheel railway leaves from the Bahnhofstrasse station and has climbed the mountain since 1871, described by its operator as Europe’s first mountain railway; at Rigi Kaltbad it meets the Mineralbad Rigi and the cable car down to Weggis. A separate cable car climbs from the village to Vitznau-Hinterbergen at 1,100 m in a few minutes, the start of hikes including the Path of Natural Treasures.

The choice runs from the five-star Park Hotel Vitznau on Seestrasse, with private lake access and two Michelin-starred kitchens across six wine cellars, to the family-run Hotel Rigi Vitznau by the cogwheel station and the See- und Seminarhotel FloraAlpina on Schibernstrasse, just outside the village. Hotel Vitznauerhof, an Art Nouveau house from 1901 reopened in 2018, and Hotel Terrasse am See, open since 1873 next to the steamboat landing stage, complete the station and lakefront sides.

Summer brings lake swimmers and boat travellers to Seestrasse, plus the ride up the cogwheel railway and hikes from Vitznau-Hinterbergen; in winter, the same railway keeps running to the snow-sports area around Rigi Kulm and Rigi Kaltbad. Getting to Vitznau

By boat from Lucerne

SGV steamships and motor vessels reach Vitznau from Lucerne in just under an hour, with hourly connections in summer. The Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Travel Pass Flex and Swiss Transfer Ticket all give free travel on the boats, so pack one of them rather than paying for the crossing separately.

By bus

AAGS line 508 runs a half-hourly lakeside service toward Küssnacht am Rigi and Brunnen; lines 502 and 653 also serve the region. That half-hourly timetable means you can turn up at the stop without booking ahead.

By car and parking

Küssnacht am Rigi, on the A4 motorway, is the nearest railway station; the lakeside road from there to Vitznau is about 10 km. Rigi Bahnen operates two car parks in the village, Seestrasse and Altdorfbachweg, so plan to leave the car there rather than looking for roadside space.

Swiss Travel Pass on the mountain railways

The Vitznau-Rigi Kulm cogwheel railway is covered by the general Mount Rigi Railways day-pass note: free with a GA travelcard or the Swiss Travel Pass, and free for accompanied children under 16. The cable car Vitznau-Hinterbergen is explicitly excluded: the GA and Half-Fare travelcards are not accepted there.
