Villars, before you book

Villars-sur-Ollon sits on a south-facing plateau at 1300 m in canton Vaud, with the Dents du Midi, the Grand Muveran and Mont Blanc in view. Alpes Vaudoises Tourisme describes a cosmopolitan resort, home to international schools with more than 1000 students and to more than 300 ski instructors. The village is not car-free: reach it by road via the A9 to Aigle or Bex/St-Triphon, or by train with a change at Aigle for a TPC bus, or at Bex for the BVB train.

Villars is not car-free, and it is not built around a single lift station either: hotels group in the village centre, on the plateau above it, and further into the resort. The plateau side, at 1300 m, carries the sunniest terraces over the Rhone valley. The cogwheel train up to Bretaye, at 1805 m, leaves from the village itself, so every base here sits within reach of the Villars-Gryon-Diablerets ski and hiking area, whichever side of the resort you choose.

The choice runs from Villars Palace, the resort’s 5-star address, to the 3-star Hotel Alpe Fleurie, with two Swisstainable-certified houses, Hotel Victoria and Residence at Level I and Le Chalet RoyAlp Hotel & Spa at Level II, and a Bike Friendly certified Villars Lodge in between. On the plateau, Hotel Les Mazots du Clos pairs its terrace with Saskia’s, a restaurant holding 13 Gault&Millau points, one of two such tables the tourist office lists in Villars.

Winter here means access to more than 130 km of pistes between 1200 m and 3000 m, the altitude of Glacier 3000, the highest point in canton Vaud; from 16 March to 29 November the Bretaye mountain train is replaced by a bus. By train, published journey times to Villars are 1 h from Montreux, 1 h 20 from Lausanne and 2 h 05 from Geneva; by car, allow about 1 h 15 from Geneva on the A9.

Take the A9 motorway to the Aigle or Bex/St-Triphon exit, then follow the signs up to Ollon-Villars; a Swiss motorway vignette, CHF 40 for the year, is required. Published driving times are 1 h 15 from Geneva, 1 h 30 from Chamonix and 2 h from Zermatt, so pair the drive with a stop rather than treating it as a short hop.
