St. Gallen, before you book

St. Gallen built its wealth on textiles, and the trade still shows in the 111 carved bay windows that line the old town, a legacy of the merchants who left their mark on it. At the centre of that old town sits the Abbey District, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983, itself only a five-minute walk from the main train station at 669 metres. Direct trains from Zurich HB take around an hour, so you can be walking under those bay windows the same afternoon you leave the city.

Three areas split the choice. The Abbey District and Old Town hold the cathedral, the library and the bay windows themselves, an easy stay for anyone building a trip around them. Bahnhofplatz, right at the station, suits a short stay or heavy luggage, with Hotel Metropol standing directly across the square. Further out, St Jakob-Strasse faces the OLMA exhibition grounds and sits close to the university, with Drei Weieren, the ponds above the old town, a walk beyond that again.

The hotels span a similar range. Einstein St.Gallen pairs its rooms with a two-Michelin-star table on the edge of the Abbey District, while Hotel Dom, run under the Stiftung Förderraum with around 55 people in training, sits in the monastery quarter itself. Hotel Walhalla has operated since 1887, the Radisson Blu faces OLMA directly, and the youth hostel offers dorms and family rooms further out. Time a visit around the Abbey Library’s opening days, since it closes for about three weeks every November or December, while the Textile Museum stays open all winter except 24 and 25 December. The cathedral keeps longer evening hours in summer, until 19:00 instead of 18:30, which suits an evening walk up to Drei Weieren while the light holds. Getting there is straightforward: direct trains from Zurich HB take around an hour, and Zurich Airport is about the same by train and bus, or by car via the A1.

The Mobility Ticket St.Gallen-Bodensee

From Zurich

Direct trains from Zurich HB take around an hour, and from Zurich Airport the route is an IC1 train to St. Gallen followed by bus 6 to Olma Messen, also about an hour door to door. Driving covers the same roughly 80 km in about an hour via the A1, but the train already ends near several of the hotels on this page, so there is little reason to add a rental car to the trip.

City transport

VBSG, the city’s bus and trolleybus operator, covers more than 300 stops on 11 lines, enough to reach every sector on this page without walking the whole way. With the Mobility Ticket already covering those fares for hotel guests, there is no separate pass to buy for getting around town.
