Why Flims

Because Flims puts the Rhine Gorge, called the Swiss Grand Canyon and marked by seven named viewpoints, the warm water of Lake Cauma at 17 to 24 degrees, and a share of the 216 km Flims Laax Falera ski area all within reach of its three parts. That means one stay can cover a gorge walk, a lake swim and a day on skis, without changing base.

Where to sleep

Skiing or a first stay: Flims Dorf, at the valley station of the local mountain railways. Lake Cauma or a spa afternoon: Flims Waldhaus, home to the wellness hotels. The Milchseilbahn and a quieter base: Fidaz, on the slope above.

Watch out

There is no railway station in Flims: build the PostBus connection from Chur into your journey time. The Fidaz Milchseilbahn does not run on Mondays and several Rhine Gorge viewpoints, Islabord, Zault, Spitg, Alix and Wackenau, open only from May to October, so check both before setting a date around them. Dogs are not allowed in the Lake Cauma bathing area, so plan to leave them at the hotel for a swim.

Flims, before you book

Flims lies in Graubünden at 1081 m, split into three named parts: Flims Dorf, the village and lift station; Flims Waldhaus, the wooded hotel quarter; and Fidaz, a hamlet on the slope above. There is no railway station here. Chur is the railhead, and from there the PostBus takes 30 minutes to Flims Dorf, or drive 30 minutes from Chur, 1 h 45 from Zürich, or 20 minutes from the Reichenau motorway exit.

Where you sleep depends on what pulls you here. Flims Dorf sits at the valley station of the local mountain railways, the practical base for skiers. Flims Waldhaus is the wooded quarter nearest Lake Cauma, about 30 minutes on foot or 10 minutes by the free lift. Fidaz, a hamlet on the slope above, is the valley station of the Milchseilbahn up to the Flimserstein at 2050 m. Flims and Laax share the same 216 km ski area, so a hotel here still opens onto it.

The choice of hotels follows the same three parts. Flims Waldhaus holds the wellness houses, the Waldhaus Flims Wellness Resort & Spa, Hotel Adula with its Nescens spa, and the Schweizerhof with its three-floor Badehaus. Flims Dorf has Hotel Vorab, right by the lift station, with its own pizzeria and a free shuttle. Fidaz has just the FidazerHof, above the village, with Ayurveda treatments and a restaurant open daily except Tuesday and Wednesday.

Winter runs from the pre-season on 28 November 2026 through the main season to 29 March 2027, and the low season closes it out on 11 April 2027. Summer belongs to Lake Cauma, with water at 17 to 24 degrees, and to trails such as the Connbächli, open from May to October. From Zürich HB, allow 1 h 54 to Flims Dorf, changing once onto the PostBus in Chur.

By car, Flims is 30 minutes from Chur, 1 h 45 from Zürich, and 20 minutes from the Reichenau motorway exit. Several multi-storey car parks in Flims and Laax charge from free for the first 30 minutes up to CHF 32.80 for 24 hours, with EV charging near Hotel Chesa and a fast-charging point in Flims, so check a car park’s daily rate before you commit to driving rather than the PostBus.

No railway, only the PostBus

Chur is the railhead: the PostBus takes 30 minutes from there to Flims Dorf, Bergbahnen, and Zürich HB to Flims Dorf comes to 1 h 54 with that one change. Book the Chur connection into your itinerary rather than expecting a direct train, since there is no railway station in Flims itself.

Airport transfer

A winter transfer from Zurich Airport is published at CHF 79, and the operator asks for a reservation 48 hours ahead, so book it before you land rather than arranging it once you arrive.

Lake Cauma rules

Admission to Lake Cauma is free, but dogs are not allowed in the bathing area, and there are published bans on drones, barbecues, nudity, foil boards and speaker music, so leave the dog at the hotel and the drone in the car if a swim here is on the plan.
