Parking in the village is limited by the tourist office’s own account, so plan to arrive by train. And from 20 June to 20 September 2026, you must reserve a time slot before riding the Oeschinen gondola up, not just buy a ticket.

Kandersteg, before you book

Kandersteg lies on the valley floor of the Kandertal, with its own station on the BLS Lötschberg line: about an hour from Bern with no change, and 28 minutes from Spiez. The village is also the northern loading point of the car train that reaches Goppenstein, in the Valais, in fifteen minutes, so through-travellers pass along the same street as those staying the night. The tourist office calls parking limited and recommends arriving by public transport rather than by car.

Three parts of the village set the choice. Around the station and Innere Dorfstrasse is where every train arrives, and where the Gasterntal walk starts at the signpost outside. Aeussere Dorfstrasse lies about five minutes further on, close to the gondola that climbs towards the Oeschinensee. The southern end, towards the Doldenhorn, Sunnbüel and the Gasterntal, is about 35 minutes on foot from the Sunnbüel valley station, or ten minutes by bus 241, and being furthest from the station, is the quieter choice.

The village mixes a handful of family-run hotels with one grand address down the valley. Waldhotel Doldenhorn and its annexe, Landgasthof Ruedihus, in a house about 250 years old, are owned by the Maeder family; Chalet-Hotel Adler has welcomed guests since 1906, and Hotel des Alpes offers a free pickup from the train. Down in the Kandertal, inside its own nature park, the Blausee Hotel stands apart from the village hotels altogether.

The Oeschinen gondola operates daily from 08:30 to 18:00 in summer, though a time-slot reservation becomes compulsory for the ascent from 20 June to 20 September 2026. Winter turns Kandersteg towards snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and tobogganing rather than downhill runs. Either season, the direct train makes it an easy trip: about an hour from Bern, 28 minutes from Spiez, or 1 h 11 from Interlaken Ost with one change at Spiez.

The arrival point

This is the sector where every stay begins: the station itself, with the Gasterntal walk signposted right outside. Hotel des Alpes, at Innere Dorfstrasse 63, will even collect you from the train free of charge. It suits a first visit or a short stopover, when convenience matters more than being close to the Oeschinen gondola, which lies further along Aeussere Dorfstrasse.

Towards the Oeschinen gondola

Aeussere Dorfstrasse sits between the station and the Oeschinen gondola: Chalet-Hotel Adler gives about five minutes on foot to the station, and the cable car up to the Oeschinensee within ten. Belle Epoque Hotel Victoria and Hotel Bernerhof share the same street. It suits anyone whose stay is built around the gondola and the lake above it, at the cost of a few extra minutes back to the trains.

Doldenhorn, Sunnbüel and the Gasterntal

The southern end, around Waldhotel Doldenhorn and Landgasthof Ruedihus, is quieter than the other two sectors, being furthest from the station and the gondola. In exchange, it sits closer to the Sunnbüel cable car, about 35 minutes on foot or ten by bus 241, and to the start of the Gasterntal walk along the Kander falls. It suits a stay built around the Gasterntal and Sunnbüel rather than the Oeschinensee.

This easier route follows the Kander falls through the Chluse, from Kandersteg railway station to Heimritz, 8.9 km and about 3 hours through a UNESCO World Heritage area. Take the bus back from Selden if retracing the same path does not appeal.

The mountain station stands at 1936 m, about eight minutes above a valley station that is itself roughly 35 minutes on foot from Kandersteg station, or 10 minutes on bus 241. Take the bus if you would rather save your legs for the trails above.

Getting to Kandersteg

Direct train

Come by direct train rather than driving: about 1 h 01 from Bern with no change on the BLS RE1, 28 minutes from Spiez, and 1 h 11 from Interlaken Ost with one change there. Book a hotel near the station if you arrive with heavy luggage, since it is the point everyone passes through.

Parking is limited

The tourist office calls parking spaces limited and strongly recommends travelling by public transport, arriving off-peak if you can. Book a hotel close to the station if you do bring a car, so the walk from wherever you eventually park stays short.

To the Sunnbüel cable car

The valley station is about 35 minutes on foot from Kandersteg station, or about 10 minutes on AFA bus line 241, so take the bus if you want to save your energy for the cable car and the trails above it.

The Lötschberg car train

Kandersteg is the northern loading station of the Lötschberg car train, and your car crosses to Goppenstein, in the Valais, in just 15 minutes: worth checking the timetable in advance if that stretch is part of your route, rather than turning back the way you came.
