Rigi Kaltbad, before you book
Rigi Kaltbad has no road of its own: it is a district of the municipality of Weggis, in canton Lucerne, reached only by cable car or by rail. From Weggis, a cable car climbs to the village in 10 minutes; from Vitznau, the Vitznau-Rigi Kulm cogwheel railway, opened in 1871 as Europe’s first mountain railway, calls here on its way to the summit. Cars stop at the valley stations, and the last stretch continues on foot or with the hotel’s help.
The village spreads across a range of altitudes rather than sitting at one point, and that is what decides where to sleep. At the centre, by the railway station, the Mineralbad & Spa stands at 1433 metres with direct hotel access. Along the Fyrabigweg, a renovated address sits a short walk from that centre. Higher still, the Staffelhöhenweg climbs toward Rigi Staffel and reaches 1550 metres, the highest point in this guide, further from the station but closer to the onward trail.
Four hotels at Rigi Kaltbad publish their own website. The Rigi Kaltbad Swiss Quality Hotel, at the centre, has 50 rooms and its own passage into the Mineralbad. Hotel Bergsonne Rigi, on the Fyrabigweg, was renovated in 2022 in an alpine-chic style and gives guests a card for 50% off the Rigi cableways. The Kräuter Hotel Edelweiss, on the Staffelhöhenweg, builds its whole concept around herbs, with a restaurant terrace for both summer and winter. Hotel Alpina, a small house at 1450 m with more than 100 years behind it, offers triple and family rooms.
The Mineralbad & Spa opens every day of the year, from 10:00 to 20:00, so the pools work whatever the season. Summer adds access to 120 km of hiking trails across the Rigi, including the Felsenweg above the village; winter keeps 35 km of trails open instead. Either way, the way up stays the same: 10 minutes by cable car from Weggis, or the cogwheel railway from Vitznau.
