Why Adelboden

Because a seven-minute cable car ride reaches a 2000 m plateau the operator calls Switzerland’s largest, above the 600 m drop of the Engstligen falls, and because the Audi FIS Ski World Cup races down the Chuenisbärgli every January. Between the two, a stay here can swing from a high alpine plateau in summer to World Cup ski racing in winter, without changing base.

Where to sleep

First stay or heavy luggage: Dorfstrasse, where PostBus 230 from Frutigen arrives. Skiing the Silleren-Chuenisbärgli sector or heading up to Tschentenalp: the slope above the village, on Bellevuestrasse, Flecklistrasse or Risetensträssli. Day trips to the Engstligen falls or the plateau: either village sector works, since the valley station is 4 km further on and has no hotel of its own.

Watch out

There is no railway station: every arrival changes to PostBus 230 at Frutigen, so add that connection to your journey time, especially with luggage. Before the ski lifts settle into daily service on 5 December 2026, the Adelboden-Lenk lifts and the Tschentenalp cable car only run on limited days, so check the exact calendar if a specific weekend of your stay depends on skiing.

Adelboden, before you book

Adelboden lies at 1350 metres in the Bernese Oberland, and there is no railway station to arrive by: the nearest one is Frutigen, on the BLS Lötschberg line, and PostBus route 230 covers the rest of the way to the village centre. Allow about 1 h 23 from Bern or 50 minutes from Spiez, counting that one change. The village itself spans 88 km² and counts 3534 residents, in a municipality where about 58% of the housing is second homes.

Three things decide where to sleep. Dorfstrasse is the main street and the point where the bus from Frutigen arrives, flat and central. Above it, the slope towards Tschentenalp carries Bellevuestrasse, Flecklistrasse and Risetensträssli, closer to that cable car but further from the bus stop. Up the valley, about 4 km on, the Engstligenalp cable car and the Engstligen falls sit at Unter dem Birg, a day-trip point rather than a place to sleep, since no hotel there has a working website.

The seven hotels range from the family-run Bären, built as the village’s first inn in 1569, to the Relais & Châteaux Bellevue Parkhotel and the adults-only Brecon. The Cambrian, on Dorfstrasse, is the only address in our dated samples with both a winter and a summer night: the winter one cost more. Among the properties we priced, the Alpina, on Flecklistrasse above the village, was the least expensive.

Winter runs at full daily service from 5 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, with limited weekend lifts from 28 November, and the Audi FIS Ski World Cup fills the Chuenisbärgli on 9 and 10 January 2027. Summer belongs to the Engstligenalp cable car, running from 13 June to 18 October 2026, and to the falls below it. From Bern, allow about 1 h 23 by train and bus, with that one change at Frutigen.

Hikers do best on Dorfstrasse, for the bus connection up to Unter dem Birg and the Engstligenalp cable car, since there is no hotel at the valley station itself, only free parking for the day. The slope above the village towards Tschentenalp works just as well, provided you don’t mind the walk down to that bus stop.

Dorfstrasse

The village centre

This is the street the bus rolls into, and the village’s commercial spine. The Cambrian, The Brecon, the Adler and the Bären all stand here, so it suits a first stay or arrival with heavy luggage, kept flat and close to the stop. In exchange, it sits below the Tschentenalp cable car rather than right beside it, on the opposite side from the slope where that lift leaves.

Above the village, towards Tschentenalp

Bellevuestrasse, Flecklistrasse, Risetensträssli

Climb above the main street and you reach the edge where the Tschentenalp cable car actually leaves, on Bellevuestrasse, Flecklistrasse and Risetensträssli. The Bellevue Parkhotel, a Relais & Châteaux member of more than 120 years, and the Alpina and Steinmattli sit on this side, suiting anyone who wants to be right at that lift. None of the three publish a walking distance down to Dorfstrasse, so the trade-off is an unmeasured walk back to the bus stop and the shops.

Up the valley, towards Engstligenalp

Unter dem Birg

About 4 km on from the village, at the end of the road and of bus route 230, this is where the Engstligenalp cable car and the lower Engstligen fall walk both start, with free parking at the valley station. It suits a day trip rather than a stay: the mountain lodging on the plateau above did not have a working website when we checked, so we list no hotel here, and every night still means driving or bussing back down to Dorfstrasse or the slope above it.

On foot

Two loops with published figures

This loop stays up on the plateau itself, starting and finishing at the Engstligenalp mountain station, so it suits a first outing straight off the cable car. Between its highest point at 1963 m and its lowest at 1937 m it barely climbs, which keeps it an easy, wheelchair and pushchair accessible walk.

Starting from the “Chäli” bus stop at Unter dem Birg, this loop leads to the lower Engstligen fall and back through the forest, passing Restaurant Bergbach on the way to the cable car station. It works as a shorter alternative to the plateau loop for anyone based in the village without time for the full cable car outing.

Up the mountain

From the valley station about 4 km up the valley, the ride takes 7 minutes to a plateau the operator calls Switzerland’s largest, at 2000 m, above the 600 m drop of the Engstligen falls. Cabins are wheelchair accessible, and free parking at the valley station makes this an easy half-day out even without a hotel up here.
Tschentenalp cable car1950 m · about 5 min
This one leaves from the upper edge of the village, the same side as the Bellevue, Alpina and Steinmattli hotels, and reaches 1950 m in about 5 minutes. In autumn it only runs Friday to Tuesday, from 19 October to 30 November 2026, switching to daily from 1 to 11 December, both blocks 10:00 to 16:20, so check the calendar before counting on a specific day.

No railway station

The nearest station is Frutigen on the BLS Lötschberg line. PostBus route 230 covers the rest: about 1 h 23 from Bern and 50 minutes from Spiez, counting the change. Build that connection into your schedule, especially with heavy luggage, since there is no direct rail alternative.

To the Engstligenalp valley station

About 4 km up the valley from the village entrance roundabout, with free parking. By bus, change at “Adelboden, Oey” for the last stop, “Adelboden, Unter dem Birg”. Plan that extra leg into a day trip rather than an evening outing, since there is no hotel at the valley station itself.

The guest card

An overnight stay gives a guest card that includes public transport in the destination. Its exact perimeter is not published, so check with your hotel exactly what it covers before relying on it for a full day out.

The World Cup weekend
