Because mineral water is the point of a stay in Scuol: it bubbles from fountains in the old quarters and fills six pools at the Bogn Engiadina, so you can plan bathing into every day rather than treat it as a rainy-day extra. Zernez, gateway to the Swiss National Park, is 33 minutes away by direct train, which puts a day in the park within reach without changing base.

Watch out

The Clemgia gorge below the old village is closed until further notice. The Bogn Engiadina sauna area stays closed until early October 2026. Scuol has no published Swiss Travel Pass coverage; what it has instead is a free Guestcard from your first night, described below.

Scuol, before you book

Scuol sits at 1250 metres in the Lower Engadine, seat of a municipality that describes itself as the largest in Switzerland by area, spanning Ardez, Ftan, Guarda, Scuol, Sent and Tarasp. Romansh is a living language here, not a museum piece: the municipality writes its own website in it. You arrive by train, since Scuol-Tarasp is the terminus of the Rhaetian Railway’s Engadine line, reached from Zürich HB in 2 h 37 with one change at Landquart.

Where you sleep depends on which side of Scuol pulls you in. The Stradun, the lively main street, holds the Bogn Engiadina mineral bath and the valley station of the Motta Naluns gondola, both a few steps from the tourist office. Below it lie the old village quarters, where mineral water still bubbles from fountains among sgraffito houses. Across the Inn, Tarasp castle and Vulpera, with its golf course, sit on the far side of the valley, a bus ride from the Stradun.

The hotels themselves fall into that same geography. Four stand on or near the Stradun with direct indoor access to the Bogn Engiadina: Hotel Belvedere, Boutique-Hotel GuardaVal, Badehotel Belvair and Hotel Astras. Above the Stradun, Hotel Arnica Scuol keeps to adults only, while Boutique Hotel ÜJA, with 11 rooms, sits in the old village centre instead. No dated price sample exists yet for Scuol, so this guide does not compare what any of them cost.

Winter here runs from 12 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, across 70 km of piste on Motta Naluns. The Bogn Engiadina stays open all year, so bathing is not a seasonal draw the way the pistes are, and summer suits walkers heading up from the gondola’s mountain station. Zürich HB is 2 h 37 away by train with one change at Landquart, and once you are here, Zernez and the Swiss National Park are a further 33 minutes by direct train.

The Stradun and the baths

This is Scuol’s busiest stretch, where boutiques and restaurants line the walk between the tourist office and the Bogn Engiadina, and where the Motta Naluns gondola leaves straight from the valley station. It suits anyone who wants the mineral bath and the lifts within a short walk, with four hotels connecting indoors to the baths so you never need a coat to get there. The trade-off is that the old village’s quieter fountains and alleys sit just downhill, not on this street itself.

The lower and upper old quarters below the Stradun

Below the Stradun, Scuol slows down: mineral water bubbles from fountains in narrow alleys between sgraffito houses, and the historic centre hosts the Engadin Fountain Bath event each year. It suits travellers who want an Engadine house rather than a modern hotel, with Boutique Hotel ÜJA and its 11 rooms right in the middle of it. The trade-off is a short walk back up to the Stradun for the mineral bath and the gondola.

Tarasp and Vulpera

Across the Inn, the castle, Vulpera and the golf course

Across the Inn, the pace changes again: Tarasp castle looks over the valley, and Vulpera holds a golf course the Belvedere hotels list as 3 km from their door, with a 25% green fee reduction for their guests. It suits travellers after a quieter, more spread-out base, and in winter a valid ski pass covers the bus back to Scuol until 8.30 pm. The trade-off is distance from the Stradun’s mineral bath and gondola, which now means a bus ride rather than a walk.

Getting to and around Scuol

By rail, changing at Landquart

Allow 2 h 37 from Zürich HB with one change at Landquart, or 1 h 44 from Chur. Sagliains is only a transfer station, so if you buy a ticket for that stretch, buy it through to Lavin when heading to Scuol-Tarasp, or to Susch when heading to Zernez.

The Guestcard, not the Swiss Travel Pass

No Swiss Travel Pass coverage is published for Scuol, so plan around the Guestcard instead: from your first overnight stay it gives free 2nd class rail between Zernez and Scuol-Tarasp, all PostBus and Engadin Bus lines between Brail and Martina, and free travel for your dog, so you need not budget for local transport separately.

By car, through the Vereina tunnel

Driving in, load the car onto the Vereina car-carrying train at Klosters Selfranga rather than looking for a road through the mountain: it reaches Sagliains in 18 minutes, and with a departure every 30 minutes, you rarely have to plan your arrival time precisely.

Evening buses need booking

Book the evening on-call bus, line 922, free of charge up to one hour before departure via the SBB Mobile app or sbb.ch: it serves Scuol to Ftan, Tarasp, Sent and, Friday and Saturday only, Valsot, so book ahead or you will be left waiting without a ride home.

Do I need a car in Scuol?

No. Scuol-Tarasp is the terminus of the Rhaetian Railway, and from your first night the Guestcard gives free 2nd class rail between Zernez and Scuol-Tarasp and all PostBus lines between Brail and Martina, with your dog travelling free, so you can plan the whole stay around public transport instead of renting a car.

Which hotels reach the mineral baths without going outside?

The bath itself lists four: Hotel Belvedere, Boutique-Hotel GuardaVal, Badehotel Belvair and Hotel Astras, so book one of those four if reaching the pools without a coat, in winter or bad weather, matters more to you than anything else in this guide.

Is Scuol a good base for the Swiss National Park?

Zernez, the park’s main gate, is 33 minutes away by direct train from Scuol-Tarasp, and the Guestcard covers that leg for free, so you can base yourself in Scuol for the mineral baths and still fit in a day in the park without renting a car.

How big is the ski area?

Bergbahnen Scuol publishes 25 pistes over 70 km, served by 13 lift installations, plus a 3.5 km toboggan run from Prui to Ftan with night tobogganing, and winter 2026/27 runs from 12 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, so book within that window if skiing or tobogganing is the point of the trip.

Can I visit the mineral baths without staying at a connected hotel?

Yes: the Bogn Engiadina is open all year to any visitor, though its sauna area stays closed until early October 2026, and travellers arriving with RhB or RailAway tickets get a published 20% discount on admission, so book your journey through one of those rather than separately if a bath visit is on the plan.
