Why Lenk im Simmental

Because the Betelberg gondola leaves from inside the village and the Adelboden-Lenk ski region spreads almost 200 km of pistes over six sectors without needing to change base, and because the valley has its own show below the lifts: seven springs on the Rezliberg send up to 2800 litres a second down through the Simmenfälle, past the Lenkerseeli.

Where to sleep

First stay or arriving by train: the centre around Kronenplatz and the station. Here for the lifts: Badstrasse, beside the Betelberg gondola and the Lenkerhof. Looking for the sunny, quieter side or the valley head near the falls: Aegertenstrasse and Oberried.

Watch out

After 25 October, the Betelberg gondola pauses, then runs Saturdays and Sundays only from 31 October, and the Adelboden-Lenk lifts do not reach daily winter service until 5 December 2026, with limited weekends from 28 November. If the ride is the point of your stay in that window, check the calendar before you book.

Lenk, before you book

Lenk sits at the head of the Simme valley, the last stop on the branch line from Zweisimmen, reached either on the BLS Lötschberger through Bern and Spiez or the MOB GoldenPass Panoramic from Montreux. From Zweisimmen itself the final hop takes nineteen minutes, direct. Unlike some Bernese Oberland villages, the road reaches all the way in: the A6 crosses the Simmenfluh tunnel from Bern in about an hour twenty, and free parking waits at the lift stations in summer.

Three streets decide where to sleep. Kronenplatz and the station form the flat centre, where Hotel Krone and the Alpenruh stand and the valley’s buses start. Badstrasse, further along, puts the Lenkerhof beside the Betelberg gondola’s own valley station. Aegertenstrasse climbs the sunny side of the village, and beyond it, at the foot of the Simmenfälle, the valley narrows towards Oberried.

The choice of hotels runs from the five-star superior Lenkerhof, a Relais & Châteaux address on Badstrasse, to the garni Alpenruh in the centre, where budget rooms share facilities and standard rooms keep their own shower and WC. Between them stand family houses: Hotel Krone on Kronenplatz, Lenk Lodge and the solar-powered Hotel Waldrand on Aegertenstrasse, and Hotel-Restaurant Simmenfälle at the valley head, open year round with tipis and tree tents alongside its rooms.

Winter runs daily from 5 December 2026 to 4 April 2027 across the Adelboden-Lenk region, with limited weekend lifts from 28 November. Summer belongs to the Betelberg gondola, running daily from 4 June to 25 October 2026, and to the alpine flower trail at its top station, open June to September. From Bern, allow about an hour and three quarters by train, changing at Zweisimmen, or about an hour twenty by car through the Simmenfluh tunnel.

The village centre and the station

This is the flat centre everyone arrives into, since the station is the end of the branch line and the valley’s buses radiate from here. Hotel Krone sits right on Kronenplatz, and the Alpenruh a short street away at Gässli 2, both a fit for a first stay or for arriving without a car. The trade-off is that the lifts themselves, the Betelberg gondola and the Elsigen-Metsch valley station, both stand at the far ends of the village.

Badstrasse is short but decisive: the Lenkerhof, a five-star superior Relais & Châteaux address, stands at number 20, and the Betelberg gondola’s valley station is at number 1, further along the same street. Choose this side if the gondola is the reason for the stay, whether up to the alpine flower trail in summer or into the Adelboden-Lenk pistes in winter. It sits away from the station end, so arrivals by train add a longer walk or a bus.

Aegertenstrasse climbs the sunny, south-facing side of the village, where Lenk Lodge and Hotel Waldrand both stand, the second in its own park with a seasonal organic garden. Further up the valley again, past the last houses, Hotel-Restaurant Simmenfälle sits at the foot of the falls, its own kitchen running to about 9 November. The tourist office does not publish walking distances between these three addresses, so treat this side as one for a car or the local bus rather than a short stroll from the centre.

A circular loop of 1.6 km at 2000 m, starting and ending at the Leiterli mountain station, with around 90 signs naming the flowers along the way. It is open June to September, with up to 70 species out in July and August.

From Leiterli, the top of the Betelberg gondola, the route climbs 531 m and drops 946 m over 13.3 km to Iffigenalp, between a maximum of 2383 m and a minimum of 1584 m, rated moderate. One short section at the Hengstensprung is secured with a fixed rope, for experienced hikers, and a bus or a walk brings you back to Lenk.

Up from the valley floor: Betelberg and Metsch

The gondola leaves from Badstrasse 1, in the village, and climbs to Leiterli, just under 2000 m, on the route Lenk to Stoss to Leiterli. Six-seat cabins carry the ride, and 12 of them are "experience gondolas" that tell stories in Swiss dialect and French through the characters Moritz the marmot, Mona the cow and Flöckli the goat.

Seven springs on the Rezliberg above Lenk are the source of the Simme, the river that gives the Simmental its name; in summer up to 2800 litres a second come out of them. The water then falls to the valley floor in a series of cascades, the Simmenfälle.
Iffigfallmore than 100 m, several cascades
The destination describes the Iffigfall as one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Bernese Oberland, with the water dropping more than a hundred metres over several cascades. It sits along the route up towards the Iffigsee, so it can be folded into the longer hike from Leiterli.

Getting to Lenk

By rail via Zweisimmen

Two routes converge at Zweisimmen: the BLS Lötschberger through Bern and Spiez, or the MOB GoldenPass Panoramic from Montreux. From there it is nineteen minutes, direct, into Lenk; Lenk-Simmental Tourismus gives about 1 h 45 from Bern overall, 2 h 50 from Zurich or Basel and 3 h 30 from Geneva.

By road

The A6 towards Thun reaches Lenk through the Simmenfluh tunnel after the Wimmis/Zweisimmen exit, about 1 h 20 from Bern. Free summer parking waits at the Betelberg and Metsch valley stations, so a first stop there costs nothing between June and the autumn.

Winter parking

In winter the free summer spots switch to paid short and long-term parking, payable through the Parkingpay or Easypark apps. Set one up before you arrive if you are driving in over the winter months.

The Simmental Card

Guests who pay the local tourist tax receive the Simmental Card, which includes free bus travel across the region plus discounted or free offers. Whether the Swiss Travel Pass separately covers any of Lenk’s own transport is not published, so budget for the local card rather than assuming national coverage.

Build that change into your schedule, since the final leg from Zweisimmen runs a direct nineteen minutes.

When does the Betelberg gondola run?

In summer 2026 it runs daily from 4 June to 25 October, with the first ascent from Lenk at 08:30, the last ascent at 16:30 and the last descent from Leiterli at 17:00. From 31 October 2026 it drops to Saturdays and Sundays only, 09:30 to 16:00, until the winter season opens, so a weekday visit only works before the end of October.
