Champery, before you book

Champery lies at 1050 m in the Val d’Illiez, reached by both road and rail rather than by cable car alone. The AOMC line, run by the TPC transport operator, climbs from Aigle through Ollon, Monthey, Troistorrents and Val-d’Illiez to its terminus at the foot of Champery’s cable car, a run of 23.138 km. Region Dents du Midi calls Champery one of the oldest tourist destinations in Switzerland, grouped with Troistorrents and Val-d’Illiez under the same tourism entity.

Three sectors decide where to sleep. Rue du Village, the historic main street, runs past the train terminus and the cable car base, and most of the village’s hotels stand along it. Route de Chavalet, at the entrance to the village, suits arrival by road. Above them both, reached only by the cable car, Planachaux sits at 1800 m, on the site of the historic cable car’s former arrival station.

The hotels themselves range from a resort open since 1896 to a boutique address open since 1914, both on Rue du Village, and a hotel fully renovated in 2015 at the village entrance. On the mountain, Hotel Plein Ciel offers 29 rooms, including a dormitory and two shared-WC Refuge rooms, a restaurant, a bar and a spa, all reachable only by lift or on foot from Planachaux.

Winter here belongs to the Portes du Soleil, 600 km of pistes across 12 resorts in Switzerland and France, with the Planachaux sector topping out at 2050 m. In summer, the same cable car and the Planachaux lifts serve hikers and mountain bikers, including the TVI 4 trail from Barme and the Lac Vert loop from Croix-de-Culet. The AOMC train from Aigle reaches the village year round, with the ticket office also selling the regional Multi Pass.

The main street, from the train terminus to the cable car

This is Champery’s spine, the street you follow from the train straight to the cable car. Four hotels line it or stand just off it: the Suisse and the National, open since 1896, the Beau-Sejour, open since 1914, and the Palladium, 100 m from the lift. Choose this side for the shortest walk with luggage, whichever way you arrived.

Whichever way you arrive by road, this is the first stretch of Champery you reach. Hotel Le White sits right at the entrance, fully renovated in 2015, with 23 rooms, 2 suites and its own wellness area. It suits arrival by car more than a car-free stay, since Rue du Village and the cable car are a further walk from here.

Planachaux, on the mountain

Reached only by cable car, above the village

Above the village, reached only by cable car or on foot, Planachaux is the site of Champery’s former lift arrival station, now Hotel Plein Ciel. Its 29 rooms range from a dormitory and two shared-WC Refuge rooms to standard rooms, with a restaurant, bar and spa of its own. Choose it to wake up on the mountain itself, at the cost of a lift ride to reach the village below.

Built in 1987 by Garaventa, the cable car climbs 899 vertical metres from 1037 m to 1936 m in cabins that seat up to 125 people each. It is the way up to Croix de Culet and onward on foot towards Lac Vert.

The main Champery ski and hike sector, at 2050 m, reached by gondola from the village and home to the former arrival station of the historic cable car, now occupied by Hotel Plein Ciel. It is the starting point for the Lac Vert loop as well as the winter pistes.

Getting to Champery, in practice

By train from Aigle

The AOMC line, run by TPC, climbs from Aigle through Ollon, Monthey, Troistorrents and Val-d’Illiez to Champery, its terminus at the foot of the cable car, a run of 23.138 km. The transport page does not publish an exact journey time, so check the TPC mobility app or timetable before you travel.

By car, up the Val d’Illiez

Champery is reached by road up the Val d’Illiez from Monthey, on the Rhone valley side of the canton, near the French border. Unlike some of its Portes du Soleil neighbours, the village is not car-free, so a hotel on Route de Chavalet or Rue du Village suits arrival by car best.

A hotel above the lifts

Hotel Plein Ciel, at 1800 m in the Planachaux sector, is reachable only by cable car or on foot, with no road access. Book it for a night on the mountain itself, and plan your last ride down before the lifts close.

The regional lift pass

Portes du Soleil sells its own Multi Pass rather than the national Swiss Travel Pass; holders ride the Champery-Croix de Culet cable car and all Portes du Soleil lifts for free, plus 30 percent off pedestrian tickets bought at the Champery cable car ticket office. Whether the national Swiss Travel Pass itself is honoured here was not confirmed on an official page.
