Ascona, before you book
Ascona is a lakefront resort of 5 322 residents on Lake Maggiore, and the first thing to accept is that no train reaches it: every arrival ends with a change onto a bus in Locarno, seven minutes away by the direct line. What waits at the other end is Piazza Giuseppe Motta, a pedestrian promenade lined with hotel terraces and cafés, where the Lake Maggiore boats also depart. That single fact, station or no station, decides how the rest of a stay is planned around buses and boats rather than trains.
Three levels decide where to sleep. Piazza Giuseppe Motta itself, flat and on the water, holds the hotel terraces, the boat pier and the summer crowds. Immediately behind it, the lanes of the Borgo climb gently to the parish church, whose tall bell tower the tourist office calls Ascona’s emblem, a quieter old-town alternative a few steps from the front. Above both, the wooded hill of Monte Verità carries its own museum complex, park and hotel, the place Ascona is culturally known for and the calmest of the three.
The hotels range from the five-star Castello del Sole, with its own farms and winery, and the Eden Roc, which calls itself Switzerland’s only true beach resort, down to smaller addresses like Albergo Carcani and the Seven Boutique Hotel, both on the lakefront. Our dated price samples put the Seven Boutique Hotel among the least expensive of this selection, and at Carcani, where both seasons were sampled, a summer night runs well above a winter one, a pattern worth checking before you fix your dates.
JazzAscona fills the Lungolago from 24 June to 3 July 2027, and that is also when the town is busiest. Outside that window, the Monte Verità museum and the Brissago Islands are both open only from mid March to early November, and closed the rest of the year, so a winter visit means a quieter promenade with fewer places to visit. Zurich to Ascona takes about 2 hours 26 minutes with two changes via Bellinzona and Locarno; from Milan, one change gets you there in about 2 hours 8 minutes.
